Nodule Treatments

Acne is one of the most common types of skin disorder. The extent of the disorder varies depending on type of acne like whiteheads, blackheads considered mild form of acne while cysts and nodule is severe form of acne. Nodule acne is identified by blocked glands of oil producing inflamed tissues and skin. Though it is a type of acne but its characteristics is completely different from blackheads and whiteheads. Nodule is dense and thick and takes the shape of dome. But in some cases, the shape might appear in irregular form. It is generally swollen and red and its effects is not limited to surrounding skin area, but also deep inside the skin. If nodules are not attended on time, then skin tissues suffers badly and deep scarring occurs.

Self treatment and self medication must be strictly prohibited. This is one of the severe form of acne and thus demands proper diagnosis, prescription and treatment. If you find that your skin is affected with nodules, without wasting any time you must consult dermatologists.

  • Antibiotics: One of the effective way of treating nodular acne is to start the treatment right at the primary stage. This not only prevents the scarring and further infection, but also uproots it effectively. For primary stage treatment dermatologist prescribes antibiotics so that infection is stopped and the skin does not suffer from further breakouts. Antibiotics are also known for minimizing inflammations and provides adequate comfort to skin swelling.
  • Isotertionoin: If nodule has crossed the primary stage then antibiotics alone are not enough in combating nodule. The body of the patient fails to respond and the pace of the treatment becomes slow. Thus, under this type of circumstances, dermatologist and medical professionals prescribe retinoid referred as isotertionoin. It is an oral medicine and generally patients are asked to take this medicine once or twice. This treatment lasts maximum for 20 weeks i.e. 5 months. Isotertionoin works by addressing the problem of extra sebum production. It works by minimizing the amount of natural skin oil production thereby preventing the pores from getting chocked.Along with its efficiency isotertionoin, the patient might suffer from side effects. It causes defects in newborn child, hence it is not recommended for pregnant women. Some of the other side effects that a patient might suffer from this medicine are skin and mouth dryness, bleeding nose, itching, photo sensitivity, muscle aches. This is one reason why the doctors keep the patients under strict supervision after the patient intakes this drug.
  • Hormonal treatment: Hormonal treatment is another way of treating nodule acne. But this treatment is limited to women only. The women patients are prescribed with anti-androgen drugs and estrogen contraceptive pills. These drugs help in reducing sebum production.
  • Sterile method: With the help of sterile equipments a dermatologist may directly remove dead skin cells and extra sebum. If the patient is suffering from enlarged lesions, cortisone injection is used. This injection is known to work directly on nodule affected area, minimize swelling and pain of inflamed nodules.
